Title of Position:  Social Worker

Location:  Helena

Position Purpose:  This position provides social work services to expectant, birth and adoptive parents in the Central area of Montana with an office in Helena.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • This position is accountable to develop working relationships and effectively engage with a small, faith-centered team within CSSM who are located throughout the state of Montana
  • Works with expectant parents to help educate and support a healthy, albeit often unexpected, pregnancy
  • Work with parents that have a child but find themselves struggling with parenting regarding resources available to them or exploring an adoption plan
  • Help to screen and educate couples seeking adoption services regarding the process of becoming an approved couple including conducting home studies, training, and aiding in the foster care licensing for the purpose of adoption
  • Provide Home Studies to couples wanting to adopt through a Direct Parental Placement or adopting a child Internationally
  • Facilitate meetings for birth parents and adoptive couples in an open adoption process
  • Ongoing support after placement for both birth parents and adoptive couples
  • Provide post placement visits to the adoptive home and complete reports of the visit
  • Provide birth parent counseling for women making a direct parent placement
  • Responsible for knowing about the adoption process and laws concerning adoption in the State of Montana
  • Skills required on a daily basis include Computer Skills (knowledge of Word, Excel, Email, and a rather complicated adoption case management program, proof reading, and handling telephone inquiries
  • Present, train, and educate community members regarding services of Catholic Social Services of Montana
  • Must have good personal judgment in assessing families and individuals and be able to keep very good records and case notes for possible use in court

 

Position Requirement

This position requires knowledge, skills, and abilities typically obtained by a college degree in Social Work with at least 2 years of experience in the adoption field.  LCSW, LCPC, Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling, or Licensure Candidate is desirable.  Social workers operate independently requiring organizational and written and verbal communication competencies, as well as sound judgment.  In addition the Social Worker must possess knowledge of: child development; root causes of emotional problems; adoption issues as they relate to the adoptive parents, birth parents, and adoptees; cultural and cross cultural issues; open adoption philosophy; and grief and loss issues in adoption. The skills necessary in order to perform the work of this position successfully include: critical thinking; application of attachment theory within relationships; understanding of family dynamics; psychodynamic processes; evidence-based practices; and the impact of trauma. The successful candidate must possess the following abilities: flexibility; self reflection; compassion, faith-filled, and commitment to service. The worker must not have values that conflict with the Catholic Church teachings. This position requires regular travel and weekend work with births; therefore it occasionally requires longer working days.  Salary begins at $34,000 with negotiations based on education and experience.
